THE IDENTITY BLUEPRINTFIND YOUR STARTING POINT

01 / THE ROLE, CLEARLY DEFINED

An IRS identifier.
A separate application.

An employer identification number, or EIN, is a federal tax identification number issued by the IRS. It does not form an entity, grant a license or approve a bank account. The IRS issues EINs free; an assistance fee, if selected, is a separate charge for service.

IRS: EIN issuance and online eligibility

Voda’s company setup services are separate from its high-risk merchant account placement for hard-to-place and non-traditional businesses. Formation, banking and processing reviews have their own requirements.

THE IDENTITY BLUEPRINTSkip the story
  1. ACT 01 / ENTITY

    Begin with the entity.

For an LLC or corporation, complete state formation first. Keep the accepted entity name available for the next application.

  2. ACT 02 / PERSON

    Identify the person.

Name the qualified responsible party. A temporary nominee is not a replacement for the person who actually controls the entity.

  3. ACT 03 / APPLICATION

    Choose the route.

Online eligibility is limited. Review the current IRS instructions to determine whether an alternative application method is needed.

  4. ACT 04 / RECORD

    Keep the record.

Retain the IRS confirmation and use the details consistently. Banking, licensing and payment reviews remain separate steps.

APPLICATION PREPARATION / NO DATA COLLECTION

01

Legal identity

Use the entity’s correct legal name and classification. An assumed name is not a substitute for the legal owner’s identity.

02

Responsible party

Identify the qualified individual and review the taxpayer identification information required for the application method.

03

Application authority

Third-party assistance requires the appropriate authorization. Confirm who may prepare, submit and receive information.

A ROUTE CHECK, NOT AN ELIGIBILITY DECISION

Online is one route.
It isn’t every route.

Online: check the IRS’s current business-location and responsible-party requirements before starting.

Applicants outside the online criteria may need another IRS method. An adviser should review the circumstances; this page does not determine eligibility or promise issuance timing.

PREPARE FOR THE CONVERSATION

Prepare the identity picture.

01

Formation or ownership record

Confirm the entity or owner exists in the intended form before applying.

02

Application facts

Business activity, addresses, reason for applying and the required responsible-party details.

03

Existing IRS records

Check whether an EIN already exists and whether a new one is actually required.

THE QUESTIONS BEHIND THE NEXT STEP

A clearer role.
A better conversation.

Confirm scope, responsibility and any separate third-party requirements before beginning.

Call (737) 775-5066
Does the IRS charge for an EIN?

No. The IRS issues EINs free. Voda’s application assistance, if chosen, is a separate service. Request its scope and fee before proceeding.

Do I need to form my LLC before applying?

The IRS instructs applicants forming an LLC or corporation to form the entity with the state first. Starting the EIN step too early can cause delays or inconsistent records.

Can an applicant without an SSN use the online tool?

The online tool has responsible-party identification requirements. Other methods may be appropriate for some applicants. Review the current IRS instructions for the actual circumstances.

Can I put a nominee down as the responsible party?

The IRS says nominees are not authorized to apply for an EIN and should not be listed as the responsible party. Identify the person who actually meets the applicable control criteria.

Will an EIN guarantee a bank or merchant account?

No. An EIN is one piece of identification. Banks and payment providers conduct their own review and may request additional information.

How quickly will my EIN be issued?

Timing depends on the application method, eligibility, accuracy and IRS processing. Confirm the applicable process without assuming the online timeline applies to every applicant.
